Gorgias helped rhetoric’s development because of his renown skills as a rhetorician. At the time the ability to communicate and deliver oratory was what gave one influence in Ancient Athens. Gorgias was a Sophist by nature of that time but rejected the title to be a â€Å"Rhetorician† and had the beliefs like the Sophist that rhetoric was a universal right. He believed that the common man deserved to learn rhetoric from teachers if the y could conjure up the large amounts money needed to learn from renown teachers of Gorgias status. Many from outside of rhetoric would say it was incredibly wrong to charge people who couldn’t afford to pay for teaching and spend all their money just to learn rhetoric. What Gorgias would argue is that those outsiders who found it wrong to charge money did not understand the power and influence rhetoric gave to someone in Ancient Athens. Rhetoric gave the common man the ability to yield conversation in the polis, debates, and

Positive Psychology of Emotional Intelligence †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Positive Psychology of Emotional Intelligence. Answer: Introduction: Every individual have different personalities and thus have different behaviour in different situations. Emotions are the very important part of the individuals life. This is because it frames the personality of the person (Goleman, Boyatzis and McKee, 2013). The ability of the person to recognize and identify those emotions and portray them correctly in society is called as emotional intelligence. It also deals with the perception an individual made about the feeling of others. Making correct perception and understanding the feeling of other person is very important for maintaining the relationships. There are different characteristics of emotional intelligence such as self-awareness, empathy, self-regulation, motivation and social skills. Emotional intelligence not only helps in maintaining the personal relationships but also helps in balancing the career life of the person. This is because it is required by the professionals to have the ability to manage people by maintain the work as well as the relationships. As far as the workplaces are considered, it has been analysed that different employees have different strengths and weaknesses and thus have different way of working (Zeidner, Matthews and Roberts, 2004). Thus, a leader at the workplace has to manage such different personalities and make them work. This requires the leaders to have high emotional intelligence in their personality. Leaders with high level of emotional intelligence can have the capability to relate with their employees. This is because if the leaders can understand the feelings of the employees, the employees find it easy to interact with the leaders about their issues (Ciarrochi, Forgas and Mayer, 2001). This makes the work more effective as th e employees can easily share their problems with the leaders. For managing different workers or a team, it is required by the leaders to understand the strength and weakness of every person along with himself. This is because understanding the strength and weaknesses enables him to take better decisions by delegating the work accordingly in the team. Respect is one of the aspect that can be earned and not being snatched from others (Brackett, Rivers and Salovey, 2011). The leaders have to show respect to their employees and their emotions so that the employee can respect the leaders. It is not only the professional and the workplace environment that affects the performance of the people but their emotional context also supports them to perform (Stein and Book, 2011). If any one of the employees in the organization is not emotionally strong and feels depressed in pressure of work, the leader has to understand the emotional side of the situation and take the decision. Being task orien ted can provide better results for the leader or the team for short them but for long term success, it is required that the leaders should have emotional intelligence to deal with the employees (Ciarrochi and Mayer, 2013). Requirement of high emotional intelligence for being a good leader is a well-known fact but the emotional intelligence can only work its level is high from the employees side as well. This is because; there is a two way communication between the employees and the leaders. If leaders have an understanding of emotions then workers should also have the same so that they can support the leaders in their decisions (Salovey, Mayer, Caruso and Yoo, 2008). It has been analysed that there are many benefits that can be achieved by the company and the team in order to have emotional intelligence amongst the personality of the people working at the workplace. It is not only the leaders who need to communicate with each other but even the workers have to be with each other in order to work from the task. Thus, the understanding between the workers is also very important for the organizations success. Having compassion for each other allow the people to have a connection. This connect make them co mfortable with each other and thus increases their efficiency to perform together (O'Boyle, Humphrey, Pollack, Hawver and Story, 2011). There are situation where the leaders have to take some decisions with the agreement of the employees. If the leader takes the decision considering the emotional context than it may be possible that the decision seems biased for the employees.in that case, it is required that worker should also have the high level of emotional intelligence so that they can also have the understanding of others emotions (Law, Wong, Huang and Li, 2008). It has been observed that emotional intelligent people are self-motivated and optimistic in nature. They usually try to perform effectively without being depressed in the condition of work load. Optimistic nature of the people also enhances the positive environment at the workplace and thus affects all other employees there (Joseph and Newman, D.A., 2010). Emotional intelligence is always portrayed as the positive aspect of the personality. But, the balanced view in this concept is very important. This is because excess of emotional intelligence in person can be taken advantage of by the others and also restricts the person to take better decisions (Farh, Seo and Tesluk, 2012). Most of the time, it has been identified that the individuals with high emotional intelligence has the ability to evaluate their one emotions as well as have the understanding of others emotions. However, at the same time it has been analysed that they can easily be manipulated. Other people can easily manipulate the individual with high emotional intelligence level and thus can alter their decisions which are not on pragmatic basis. Being practical is also very important for the organizations to complete their task or achieve the objective (Mittal and Sindhu, 2012). If the employees or the leaders only work at the cost of not compromising with the emotional asp ect than it becomes very difficult for the team to achieve their gaols. This suggests that balance is the only effective element that needs to be maintained by the leaders and the workers. Being heavily emotions and not considering the work is also not acceptable by the organizations and being only task oriented can also affect the performance of the employees negatively (Antonakis, Ashkanasy and Dasborough, 2009). Reflective essay: According to my understanding, I used to define emotional intelligence as the capability to understanding the emotions of others. However, after researching about the topic I realized that it does not only about understand others emotion but it is also about the evaluating your own self and regulating your own emotions in different situations (Mayer, Salovey and Caruso, 2008). By this study, I have gained the knowledge of the importance of emotional intelligence at the work place, it has been identified that it is not only the leaders who have to keep high level of emotional intelligence but the workers should also play their part in having the emotional understanding (Ct, Lopes, Salovey and Miners, 2010). The efforts from both the sides can maintain the relationship as well as the working of the team. When the people work in teams, they have to feel the connection with each other and have to understand each others emotions if they want to perform effectively. This study helps me in learning about the various principles of emotional intelligence that are self-awareness, empathy, motivation, social skills and self-regulation. I can also use these principles in my life to have better emotional intelligence. During this study, I have also analysed my personality on the emotional context and realised that I can feel the emotions of other person but not have the capability to self-regulate my emotions at times. This is because the emotional part of my personality becomes dominant and makes it difficult for me to supress my emotions in front of others. This suggests that I am emotional but does not have the capability to handle my emotions at times and have low emotional intelligence. As far as social skills are considered, I have realized that I am a social person and have the ability to interact with people. This suggests that I just need to learn how to regulate my feelings in ore to increase my level of emotional intelligence. The essay that I have written speaks about the importance of emotional intelligence to workers as well as leaders. This is because both of them have two way communications with each other and everyone has to align their thoughts with each other in the team to work efficiently (Sadri, 2012). The learning from this assignment will definitely helps in my future when I will become a part of an organisation or works with the team leader. I need to brush up some of my skills and I believe that I will definitely implement the things I have learnt in real life as well. This is because; it only helps me in my future career and personal life to bring balance in the emotional and the practical views of may personality. As I have understood that balancing is the most important factor to maintain emotional intelligence in the personality. References: Antonakis, J., Ashkanasy, N.M. and Dasborough, M.T., 2009. Virginia Woolf the Death of the Moth Essay Example

Virginia Woolf the Death of the Moth Essay Battle between Life and Death Our existence is the battle between life and death. We face it everywhere; in people’s eyes’ and behavior, in the motions of the creatures that surround us and in the nature that somehow dies in the winter and gets a new life in spring. This battle is impossible to remain unnoticed because it is simply the way of life. In Virginia Woolf’s essay â€Å"The Death of the Moth†, she writes about a moth that is trying to get ‘a new life’ by going through the windowpane and run away from death. Virginia Woolf was a significant figure in London modernist literary society and she was considered one of the greatest innovators in the English language. Due to her hard childhood, as her mother, sister-in-low and father died when she was young, she had several nervous breakdowns. Virginia had the illness which was called manic-depressive disorder in those times. On the march 28, 1941, Woolf filled her overcoat’s pockets with stones and drowned herself in the river near to her house. The Death of the Moth† was published in 1942, after her death, and this is the reason why this essay is considered to be written about her feelings before she decided to commit suicide. like the moth, she seemed to say, â€Å"Death is stronger than I am. † The moth flew from one side, to the other, of his square of the windowpane. Nothing remained for him but this, while the â€Å"possibilities of pleasure† were enormous in that morning. The same energy that was outside inspired the moth too. He was trying to escape the scarcity of the room, in comparison Virginia was trying to escape from her world of depression too. From the world which was not filled with the same energy that was outside. â€Å"He was little or nothing but life†, but the situation changed. The moth settles on the windowsill and Woolf forgets about him until she notices that the moth is trying to resume his ‘dancing ‘. Now his movements are slow and awkward, his attempt to fly fails. Woolf is like a spectator watching the struggle and that reminds us of her fight for recognition for all women and her personal struggle with mental illness. In World War II during the bombing of London when her London house was destroyed, she found herself unable to write and the next major pisode of her depression started. She felt the fear of German invasion every day and she seemed to see the same enemy when she said; â€Å"The legs agitated themselves once more. I looked as if for the enemy against which he struggled. † We might say that the conclusion begins when the writer, trying to help the moth with the pencil realizes that the moth is dying; and this awkwardness is the approach of death. The little moth is unable to right himself and every trial to fight brings him more pain and suffering. As this is a philosophical essay, we may say that the motions of the moth are somehow related to humans facing irresolvable dilemmas and trying to find energy to continue their life. In the final paragraph, the writer’s attention shifts away from the moth to the world outside. It is midday and everything is stopped, the previous animation is replaced by stillness and quietness, as the nature expresses its sympathy like this. The energy is still there but it somehow stopped moving, â€Å"not attending to anything in particular. † Near the end of the paragraph, Woolf uses her pencil to lift the moth once again, but realizes that the effort is futile and says, â€Å"The struggle is over†. Yeah, this struggle is over but the battle between life and death is the same again. We will still be able to discover it around us, as it is a simultaneous and inevitable component of our existence.

Retail Management Your complete guide to starting your career

Retail Management Your complete guide to starting your career If you’re thinking about a career in retail management, either because you’ve put in your time in the entry-level retail trenches and want to move up in the field or you’re considering a career change, you probably have a general idea of what to expect. After all, retail is not for the faint of heart. However, there’s a difference between working in retail and making it your career, so if you’re considering taking that step to level up, we have the info you’ll need to help make that decision. How will you know if it’s a good fit?If you’ve gotten this far, it’s likely you’ve already found retail to be a good fit for you, on paper. But what are the qualities you’ll need to have as a retail manager?Good personality counts for a lot here. Some common traits found in successful retail managers include:Strong customer focus. The customers may or may not always be right, but they will always be your priority. Manag ers who care about providing excellent customer service, even under stressful circumstances, do well.Leadership skills. The manager will be in charge of other employees as well as store operations, so it’s important to be someone who can step up and lead rather than melting into the crowd. The ability to make peace. Whether it’s dealing with employee drama or customer issues, at some point the manager will have to be the one who fights off irritation or frustration and placates different kinds of personalities to make sure things are resolved well.If you struggle in any of these areas, it doesn’t mean you can’t be a good retail manager, but it might mean putting in extra work to create a successful professional persona. Being part of retail management means being able to navigate the challenges of keeping everything running smoothly while also accommodating corporate/business goals and customer needs. What is the day-to-day like?Retail managers are typicall y responsible for the daily operations of a brick-and-mortar store- whether it’s a big box giant like Walmart or your Mom and Pop hardware store down the street. Basically, every store needs someone to ensure that sales goals are being met, staff are being managed, the store is operating well, and that customer needs are being met. A retail manager’s tasks may include:Opening and closing the storeHiring and managing staff membersManaging the daily employee scheduleAnalyzing sales and setting sales goals for the storeCreating and maintaining store budgetsAnalyzing and coordinating inventoryCreating store displaysWorking with and reporting to senior management in the company (for example, a head office or a store owner)Communicating financial informationWorking with vendors and suppliersEnsuring that the store is clean, organized, and well-maintainedMonitoring expenses and store losses (security)Handling escalated customer service issuesRetail managers are responsible fo r making sure everything gets done in a store, and that it’s done well. Retail managers can also expect to work long weeks (potentially more than 40 hours), on varied schedules. After all, stores are open all week long, and increasingly on holidays. This is not your standard 9-to-5 in a cubicle gig. What types of retail management jobs are out there? Some of the most common retail management job opportunities include:Store ManagerRetail Operations ManagerTeam LeaderStore General ManagerAlthough most retail management positions are still in what we would think of as â€Å"normal† stores, the retail landscape is definitely changing. So in addition to the traditional store manager roles (showing up at a specific store and making sure that physical operations are going according to plan), there will be increasing opportunities to manage digital retail as well. Managers who are well-versed in supply chain logistics or online sales have versatile skill sets that could help the m advance in our increasingly digital economy. What education will you need? One of the best things about getting started retail is that you don’t need to get an extensive education before you jump in. The retail path often starts with a high school degree and on-the-job training, and then growing experience as you take on more responsibility. Hands-on experience is often more valuable in this field than a specific education credential. To become a retail manager, however, an associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree, or course in sales, business, or management can help you get to the management level faster. If you don’t have a degree, don’t worry- there’s still a path to retail management. You can take your existing experience and use that to create longer-term goals. You can also stay and grow within a certain company, using the promotion ladder to get where you want to be. At every level of your retail career, make sure you’re learning e verything you possibly can about how your store (and retail in general) works, because this is an education you can’t get elsewhere- and you never know when that information can help boost you to the next level. What skills will you need?As mentioned before, retail managers have to be able to juggle many different obligations and tasks. These core skills will serve you very well in a retail management career.Communication skillsManagers have to be able to communicate clearly and effectively with all sorts of different people: employees, upper management, suppliers or vendors, and employees. That means being able to adapt a message to the right audience and strike the right tone as necessary. Listening skills are also essential, so that potential problems can be understood and addressed as quickly and efficiently as possible.Problem solvingEvery retail manager is going to deal with problems- problems with employees, problems with customers, problems in getting the right merchan dise, problems with security, you name it. If your solution to a direct challenge is to pull inward, turtle-style, and hope it goes away, this job might not be for you. Instead, retail managers should be able to see a problem clearly, and be able to come up with a workable solution- even if it’s not a perfect one. Results focusIt’s not enough to keep a store going- managers will also be responsible for performing well according to different metrics, whether it’s a store’s financial performance, sales goals, employee goals, customer feedback, etc. It’s crucial to understand what these criteria are that you’ll need to meet and focus your attention on hitting them.ProfessionalismAs mentioned before, the retail manager will often need to step in and be the grownup in cases of conflict or customer complaints. A professional demeanor at all times is very necessary.Math skillsRetail managers are often responsible for extensive reporting and analysis when it comes to a store’s finances and budgets, so being able to do the math efficiently and accurately is important.Negotiation skillsWhether it’s trying to create an employee schedule without causing a revolt or trying to get a better deal from vendors, knowing how to negotiate your way out of any situation is a powerful tool for a retail manager to have.Engaging people skillsRetail managers are not solo acts, so they have to be able to inspire their teams to do work together for the common good of the store. Fear and anger are not the best motivational tools around, so it’s essential to have the skills to be able to get people to want to do their best work- and to motivate them when they don’t necessarily want to do it.What is the potential career path? â€Å"Retail management† can seem like an end goal in and of itself, so if you haven’t thought much yet about the nuances of what you can do once you get to that point, you’re not alone. Once you get a certain level of management experience, those skills are very transferable all over the retail landscape. You may decide to specialize in a particular area, like one of the following:MerchandisingMarketingPersonnel managementCustomer serviceTrainingOperationsWarehousingOnce you have skills and experience, you may find that different management opportunities may open up even within the same company. What kind of salary can you expect?According to salary.com, retail managers can make a pretty wide range of salaries, with a median between $48,091 and $65,734. How to Build a Modern PR Plan That Works With Marketing (Template) If youre at all like me, then one of your most recent experiences working on a standard press release might be that media relations class you took in college. Think about it. When was the last time your team sent a press release to a reporter, received some valuable coverage, and saw your site traffic boom? Or, on the other hand, when was the last time a cold email landed in your inbox that truly excited you about the possibilities within that strangers pitch? Public relations has undergone some major transitions. In fact, you could go so far as to say that todays PR doesnt look much at all like the PR of yesterday. Media and communications has always been an industry that moves quickly, and advances in technology and social media have escalated those moves. Add to that audiences increased expectations of trust, authenticity, and the rise of practices like content marketing, and its clear PR really had no choice but to evolve or become largely obsolete. Now, if you havent already, take a moment to lament all the hours you spent in your PR classes, drafting press releases and debating whether majoring in communications was a good idea. It's still press your company earns  in a third-party outlet, and it still helps you establish credibility, boost brand awareness, and extend your brand positioning. The biggest difference is in its execution. Modern PR is much less transactional and more relational than ever before. In the past, marketing and PR teams could trade templated press releases to reporters in hopes of some self-promotional writeup published by whoever would pick up the story. The new PR  is focused on your relationships with journalists, influencers, editors, and contributors at online publications and with the audiences you share with them. Trust is key, and it's earned by delivering valuable content to media contacts who can use it to provide value to their readers - the audience you're ultimately trying to reach. Audiences want engaging content from outlets they trust. When you pitch media contacts at those outlets truly valuable content and sources they can use to publish that engaging content (rather than stuffy, self-promotional releases), everyone wins. If some of this talk of "value" and "audience engagement" is ringing a bell to you, it's probably because content marketing focuses a lot on these things, too. Modern PR and content marketing are not one in the same, but content marketing has proven too effective for PR to ignore. That's why it's evolved beyond overt self-promotion en masse to offer more value - to audiences, media contacts, and the brands using modern PR alike. Below are seven essential steps to building and implementing a modern PR strategy for your company: Table of Contents: Building a PR Plan in 7 Steps Lay Out Your Brand Positioning Goals Identify the Outlets That Reach Your Audience Create Strategic, High-Quality Content Carefully Craft Your Pitches Develop (And Use) a Distribution Plan Keep Your Network Organized Don't Neglect Your Content Marketing1. Lay Out Your Brand Positioning Goals Most people understand PR as a tool to really supercharge buzz around a one-time event or product launch. It's something that can quickly get a lot of people excited for a short time before fizzling out after that event or launch concluded. It is absolutely still a good tool for that - but how many events, launches, or other truly newsworthy events do you expect to happen in a year's time? Your company is doing important work for clients every day. How are your PR efforts elevating that work and, therefore, your brand overall? PR can also be used to help generate and sustain brand awareness, interest, and credibility that don't have an expiration date. PR can help generate brand awareness, interest, and credibility that don't have an expiration dateTo do this, start considering the bigger picture of how you want your audience to see your brand. How do you want your brand to be seen? What do you want to be known as an expert in? What feelings do you want your brand to inspire in your audience? Look beyond short-term goals for event registrants or demo sign-ups, and think about how you want to position yourself in front of your target audience. When you know how you want to be seen, you can better identify the outlets, writers, and editors that can help reinforce that brand image. Action Item: Develop an effective branding strategy and understand where you fit in the marketplace. Start with this detailed guide from Jordan Loftis. 2. Identify the Outlets That Reach Your Audience Your audience is looking for content that's informative, engaging, and published on sites it trusts - like reputable online publications in their industry. Historically, publications were managed by journalists and traditional reporters and staff writers. But audience demand for that informative, engaging content has risen, and those outlets have grown their networks to include content from other sources, too, like industry leaders, experts, and individual contributors. To position your brand in front of the right audience, identify where they're getting their content. Which industry influencers, thought leaders, journalists, and editors do they trust? What outlets do they love? Start compiling a list of potential publications and contacts to pitch that align with your brand positioning goals and reach your audience. Action Item: Use Buzzsumo to identify influential media outlets and journalists. 3. Create Strategic, High-Quality Content Now, if you're not sending out press releases to those contacts you've listed, what exactly are you pitching? Content. This content is part of your PR efforts, so you might think it has to be really self-promotional to make the impact you're looking for. But that's not what modern PR is about. It's about value to your audience and your media contacts - which translates into value for your brand. When our team surveyed publication editors about the biggest problems they have with the content they're pitched, 79 percent  said content is too promotional and 56 percent said it isn't a fit for their readership. So, as you're creating content to pitch editors and other contacts, ask yourself: Does this content align with my company’s goals? Does it add value to readers? Does it align with the tone, topics, and opinions expressed in the publication I'm pitching? A good way to test whether the content you've created is as beneficial to your contact and your audience as it is to your PR goals is to remove your company completely from the content. If a quote or link or mention you've included about yourself can be removed without really affecting the piece, then it probably doesn't add much value. If the piece loses value when you do this, then you know that whatever you've included about your company enhances the quality of the content, which is good news for everyone involved. It's important here to note that not every media contact is going to want to receive a pitch with a full article attached. The content you're creating here can be a full article for the publication of one of the contacts you're reaching out to. It can also be the outline of an article, or it can be a summary and key points. Regardless of the content formatting your contact prefers to receive, remember to avoid overt self-promotion, and keep it relevant to the outlet's tone and topics. Action Item: Develop a full understanding of how guest blogging works with this excellent interview with Jeff Ostroff of Don't Panic Management. Then, follow this guide on developing high-quality content. 4. Carefully Craft Your Pitches Your pitches should be created with as much care as the actual content you create - because if your pitches get deleted, your content goes with it. Take the time to research your points of contact, customize your emails to demonstrate your message is worth reading, and remember the following points as you pitch your media contacts: Get Specific These people likely receive plenty of pitches - why does it make sense for them to accept yours? To make your case, include a few key points from your content, in addition to an overall angle, article summary, and title suggestions. You should also provide an explanation of your company and any subject matter experts and sources included in your content. This helps your contact understand who you are, why you're a valuable, trustworthy source, and why your inclusion in this content is an important addition that can enhance audience engagement. Respect Their Schedules and Expectations Your contacts aren't just watching their inboxes, waiting for a pitch from you. They are incredibly busy. They're creating their own content, collaborating with other writers and brands, and they're working on tight deadlines. Their time is valuable, and when you're asking them to fork over even a little bit of it, you must respect it by proving to them you care about more than just what's in it for you. Lay the Groundwork for a Relationship Modern PR isn't about quick, one-time wins; it's more relational than transactional. Be friendly, personable, and patient in your communication, and offer to revise or refine any content if needed. A good relationship benefits you both (and the audiences you share), and it's up to you to lay that foundation in your outreach. Action Item: Follow this guide and template to make every pitch perfect. 5. Develop (and Use) a Distribution Plan Let's say your pitch goes well. This journalist or editor or influencer loves your idea and decides to use you as a source in an article he or she publishes. This is typically the exciting part, but it doesn't mean your work is done. You can't rely on these contacts to distribute this content for you. You have to do your part in maximizing press and getting this content to as many people as possible. Thankfully, there are so many ways to distribute content. Consider: sending an email to your team with a request for them to share it on social media. sharing this content on your company's social media accounts. encouraging your sales team to send it to leads and in other outreach. putting some paid promotion behind it. adding it to your email signature. including an "As Seen On" badge on your site. including it in your newsletters or drip campaigns. These are just some  suggestions. You know your audience best, so use every avenue you have to deliver this content to them. The important thing is that you don't just sit on any content or press once it goes live. Sharing it with your audience helps you, as well as the contact who helped secure it. Action Item: Two places to start sharing your content include social media and your email list. 6. Keep Your Network Organized This approach to modern PR isn't a one-and-done tactic. Obviously, pitching the same content to the same contacts isn't the idea here, but maintaining your relationships is critical. You don't want to work with a contact of yours to place content and then ghost them as soon as you've gotten your press. When you're implementing this plan, you'll want to organize and manage your own network. I recommend starting small with a simple spreadsheet that you and other members of your marketing and PR teams can contribute to. This gives you a centralized place to store information about your media contacts, including: Names Email addresses Twitter handles Publication names Tone Topic And other content guidelines, and pitch preferences. This will help you easily identify who you should reach out to with different kinds of content, which is key to maintaining good relationships. It can also serve as a place to record your outreach and keep your relationship status updated, so you know how often you're connecting with various people in your network and if any contact information changes. Once you have a way of seeing what everyone's wants, needs, and goals are, it's much easier to meet them - or to make strategic introductions to other sources you know could potentially help out these journalists and editors. Bottom line:  If you want to secure mentions of your brand and deliver quality content to your audience, then you need to build and manage of a robust network of contacts. A spreadsheet is as good a place to start as any. Action Item: You can find a free Google Sheets template to create your spreadsheet here. 7. Don't Neglect Your Content Marketing Remember previously when I addressed how similar some aspects of this modern PR are to content marketing? Well, modern PR and content marketing may share some ideas, but that doesn't mean either can act as a substitute for the other. The honest truth is that an effective PR plan today is one that works alongside a robust content marketing strategy. Public relations and content marketing  work so well together because they fuel one another. Your content marketing can generate press coverage, which can fuel your content marketing, which can ... you see where this goes. Your content can be your foot in the door to PR opportunities. It helps you build your brand as a leader in your space, which can help you grab the attention and interest of journalists, influencers, and other members of the press. Your content can be your foot in the door to PR opportunities.Think about it: Would a journalist or influencer be more willing to accept a pitch from someone who's been consistently creating content in their industry and building their brand, or someone who's never created any content? Plus, surrounding your brand with expert content can even lead to press opportunities you don't pitch yourself - ones that emerge organically, that come as a result of your industry expertise. And on the other side of the spectrum PR can amplify your on-site content because it directs more people to it. More people in your audience who see your company mentioned in the press can find their way to your site where they can explore even more content and continue engaging with your brand. These two work too well together to skimp on either. Maximize your modern PR strategy by continuing to invest in your content marketing. Action Item: Read these resources to do better content marketing: How to Build a Content Marketing Strategy You'll Actually Use (Free Template) The Best Way to Get Organized With a Content Marketing Editorial Calendar (Free Template) How to Choose the Best Content Marketing Platform Ready to Master Modern PR? You may not have learned about this evolution of public relations in college, but I'd say if you've made it all the way through this post, you've kind of taken a master class in modern PR. Your PR practices don't have to continue down an outdated and old-fashioned path that shortchanges your brand, your media contacts, and your audience members. It's time to get on board with modern PR, and these steps will help ensure it's an easy transition.

Experiencing Art in Person Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Experiencing Art in Person - Essay Example Mr. Sprick carefully picked elements in the painting to bring life yet retaining a sense of mortality. Nothing in the artwork seems to be situated I its place in reality. Pins in the skull eyes are weird. The Ross and the plate are suspended which is not natural. How did a broken egg shell get to be suspended on a knife? Why would a soup can and beer bottle be put next to each other for communication? Stalin's Effects on Society and Politics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Stalin's Effects on Society and Politics - Essay Example Further, by forging a communist bloc from Asia to Europe, Stalin helped to form the basic framework of international politics in the second half of the twentieth century (Kopstein & Lichbach: 212-213). The Soviet dictator Josef Stalin was a convinced communist as well as a staunch supporter of Lenin’s ideas about party organization. He was able to gain unprecedented political power, rising to the highest position in the Leninist party based on his better institutional supports, organizational skills, ideological concepts, his implacable loyalty to the party as well as faith in its eventual triumph. Stalin did his best to enforce Leninist principles of â€Å"democratic centralism†, of strict party discipline and control over a hostile society (Kopstein & Lichbach: 214). Several issues confronted Marxists in the Soviet Union, following their revolutionary victory, such as, how to build â€Å"socialism† in a predominantly peasant country without the support of proletarian revolutions in more advanced capitalist countries. The policies that were formulated and implemented by Stalin, ultimately destroyed millions of people and left a heavy burden of economic conditions as a legacy for post-Soviet Russia. Yet, Stalinism was the most consistent ideological position that could successfully be adopted after Lenin’s death, as compared to the three opposing positions adopted by Stalin’s opponents belonging to the Left, the Right and the Orthodox Center. The Left was headed by the famous revolutionary Leon Trotsky who incited Soviet workers to redouble their efforts to rapidly build a strong industrial infrastructure, and argued that the Bolsheviks should stive to foment revolutions throughout western Europe. However, Trotsky’s pow er and influence declined rapidly by 1924, with party members and ordinary workers tiring of revolutionary appeals after three years of world war, a year of revolution and three years of

Tyler Perry Exploits Black America Essay Example for Free

Tyler Perry Exploits Black America Essay Actor, director, playwright, screenwriter, producer and, author Tyler Perry has taken Hollywood by storm. Perry has grossed close to $500 million in domestic box office receipts since 2005 (Smith) with his stage plays that have been turned into movies. Being ranked by Forbes magazine as the sixth highest-paid man in Hollywood (Daniels), Tyler Perry has revolutionized black entertainment by becoming the first black man to own a major movie and television studio in Atlanta, GA (Walker). I like Tyler Perry and enjoyed his early stage productions and films such as â€Å"Daddy’s Little Girl’s† and â€Å"The Family that Preys†. However, I struggle with his portrayal of black people, more specifically on his TBS television show, â€Å"House of Payne†. Perry’s â€Å"House of Payne† exploits African Americans as entertainment, combining slap stick comedy with regressive stereotypes with characters such as Curtis the Coon, Ella the Mammy, Janine the Drug Addicted, selfish Mother and Calvin the â€Å"Happy Negro†, remedial Player. I plan to deconstruct the â€Å"House of Payne† to reveal its minstrelsy nature and demonstrate how â€Å"House of Payne† does nothing to counteract racial assumptions that black people are ignorant, hip hopping, over weight jigaboos that are nothing more than comic relief. Tyler Perry supporters, who are mostly black, church going women, feel as though they can relate to Perry’s characters, strong Christian messages, and are happy that Perry keeps black actors on the big screen, and on television (Smith). Much has been said about Tyler Perry’s â€Å"House of Payne† and how it is a new millennium minstrel show. Minstrel shows consisted of white male actors, in black face that performed what they perceived as blackness. Performers of blackface interpreted blacks to be lazy, buffoonish, cowardly characters that often lied, stole and mangled the English language (Stark). Ultimately minstrel company owners hired black men and women, emphasizing that their ethnicity made them the only true delineators of black song and dance (Mahar). Black minstrels added religious themes to their shows while whites shied from that made them a popular hit amongst other blacks. Once minstrel shows began to decline in popularity, blackface continued by way of film (Mahar). One of the most notable actors was Lincoln Theodore Monroe Andrew Perry, also known as â€Å"Stepin Fetchit†. Although he was the first black actor to become a millionaire, the persona of â€Å"Stepin Fetchit†was the quintessential lazy, foolish, shucking and jiving Negro (White). Film critic, Armond White in his essay The Rehabilitation of Stepin Fetchit† asserts: â€Å"Should African-American performers be accountable to political correctness? To what degree should they worry that their antics shape the self-image of young African-Americans? Should they follow any standard other than their own conscience? Should they have a conscience? The psychological rationale for racism cuts two ways—flattering whites and defaming blacks—and it rebounded upon Stepin Fetchit and stained his soul. â€Å" Whites projected stereotypes onto black people and now we help them out: the buffoon, the Mammy and the Jezebel have been replaced with the ghetto fabulous drama queen, the feminized male, the thug and the dope fiend. Television is a powerful agent of information that not only shapes our way of seeing the world, but influences how we view and understand differences (Ford). The stereotyping of African Americans can partly be attributed to television limiting black actors to roles to jezebels, street punks, simple minded servants, and violent criminals. With the success of the Tyler Perry brand, Todd Boyd, Professor of Critical Studies at USC School of Cinematic Arts, asserted that Tyler Perrys works â€Å"are rooted in some of the worst stereotypes that have ever existed† (Svetkey, Watson, Wheat). Donald Bogle, author of Toms, Coons, Mulatoes, Mammies Bucks: An Interpretive History of Blacks in American Films, tends to agree: If a white director put out this product, the black audience would be appalled. The main characters in â€Å"House of Payne† are a married couple Curtis and Ella Payne, who are comparable to Ol’ Darkie and his counterpart Mammy in various minstrel shows. ‘Old Darky’ or ‘Old Uncle’ was usually the head of the black family (Stark), just as Curtis is the patriarch on the â€Å"House of Payne†. Curtis or Uncle Curtis is known for his loud over the top delivery, grumpiness, and brash jokes. Coons, are a source of amusement because they are complete buffoons (Toll). Every episode the audience can expect a slap stick performance from Curtis ranging from slapping of other cast members to the tumping his toe and falling over a chair. Ella is the exact replica of Mammy, which is one undeniable fixture in any Tyler Perry production. Ella is dark skinned, overweight, a great cook and singer and is the religious glue that holds the family together. Ella’s matronly demeanor causes for her well- liked by everyone and will put Curtis in his place when he gets irate. Tyler Perry replaces Mammy’s head wrap and apron and puts Ella in clothing that only exaggerates her unhealthy size. One episode, Curtis and Ella go on diets because they are at risk for diabetes and heart attacks. Curtis, who himself is obese, foolishly does a single jumping jack and falls out as if he just ran a marathon and hides snacks and fried food all over the house. Ella, who sticks to the diet for a few days constantly, nags Curtis about the risk factors. The story looks to be headed in a motivational direction as African Americans are twice more likely to develop diabetes than white people (CDC), however the scene ends with both of them abandoning their diets and exit to get a fried chicken sandwich (Perry). Curtis and Ella have a son, Calvin Payne who lacks common sense, motivation, yet is a self-proclaimed ladies’ man. Calvin is similar to â€Å"Happy Negro† who seems to relish in his stupid and immature nature (Stark) that causes any scheme or idea of his own to greatly backfire. Perry relies heavily on the well-worn stereotypes that black people have been subject to and Calvin is another Tyler Perry pattern. Calvin has had numerous relationships throughout the show and eventually gets married to Miranda, but finds out he’s fathered a child out of wedlock with an ex-girlfriend Tracie at the same time his wife reveals she too is pregnant. Perry strips Calvin of a dignified title of married man, father-to-be and to the stereotypical black man who is a low down, cheating â€Å"Baby Daddy†. In the doctor office scene where Calvin, Miranda and Tracie coincidently cross paths, Calvin is surprised that he has a son and asininely asks â€Å"how’d this happened? † The racists Dr. Marcos (who calls Tracie â€Å"Bonqueisha and Soul Sister†) scientifically dissertates that â€Å"when black people are poor, uneducated, unemployed and can’t play basketball, they have nothing to do but have sex† (Perry) and the laugh track spits out entertaining cackle. Where is the humor in that punch line? While some audience members can point out that we all know someone like that what Perry lacks is any compassion or ability to humanize these characters making them a moral, baby making caricatures (Smith). According to the CDC, at the end of 2007, blacks accounted for almost half (46%) of people living with a diagnosis of HIV infection in the 37 states and that is no laughing matter (CDC). Tyler Perry has been quoted saying that his characters are based off of real life people, especially the women he saw growing up as a young boy in New Orleans (Lapowsky). I believe that Perry’s work is a reflection of what he saw as a youth, however I agree with critics like Spike Lee and Edris Elba who maintain that it’s time for Perry’s work to be elevated and cease with the â€Å"coonery and buffoonery† (Svetkey, Watson, Wheat) as Perry’s work continuously delivers monolithic characters that are satirical at best. The House of Payne storyline takes place with three generations living under one roof because Janine, the wife of CJ who is also Curtis’ nephew, burns down their house to claim the insurance money to fuel her crack cocaine habit. She can be compare to the â€Å"wrench† or â€Å"Yaller Gal† who through the show, deserts her family to live as a dope fiend, then after she is rehabilitated, divorces CJ and becomes pregnant by a new man. The boyfriend is revealed to be sterile and after a drunken one night stand with CJ, process of elimination proves CJ is the father. Janine and CJ eventually remarry and by the final season, Janine flirts with the idea of having an affair with her boss. To protect the black women, you must also protect how she is being depicted regularly (Haven). White women are casted in various roles, however dating back to minstrelsy, black women are type casted as loud mouth, promiscuous, drug addicted breeders. It has nothing to do with talent, but choices by the studios and decision makers like Tyler Perry to determine what is projected. The entertainment business is just that, a business. As does any business, the entertainment industry relies heavily on supply and demand. If there is a demand, it is supplied. The support of Tyler Perry proves that there a demand for black entertainment. At the end of his stage play â€Å"Madea’s Family Reunion†, Perry as himself, addressed the audience saying â€Å"as long as yall wanna see Madea, I’ma do Madea† (Perry). In essence, as long as black people keep supporting Tyler Perry shows like â€Å"House of Payne†, he’ll keep feeding his audience the same chitterlings and cornbread. Tyler Perry has capitalized off â€Å"House of Payne† as he exploits stereotypes of African Americans. There are other ways to make us laugh and make money. Until black American stops clinging to such degrading material and demand more substance and social responsibility, just as those before us did with minstrel shows and blackface, Tyler Perry will fill the demand with more characters like Curtis, Ella, Calvin and Janine.

chivalry Essay -- essays research papers

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Ancient to Modern: The Transformation of Chivalry During the medieval era, great adventures and accomplishments of unimaginable feats were told of mortal humans know as Knights. Knights were seen to be the elite, displaying their gentleman-like manners throughout every aspect, which they lived, from social events to acts of brutal combat against their adversaries. Every action of a Knight would be done with honor, courage, respect and courtesy. Knights who demonstrated these characteristics were seen as chivalrous. Webster’s New World Dictionary defines chivalry as, â€Å"The qualities of an ideal knight, courage, honor, gallantry and courtesy† Adding to this, I believe that chivalry must be displayed in every circumstance, which could be presented to this individual who claims to live and die by this sacred creed of pure honor. To this, the ideas and concepts of chivalry are viewed by most in modern society to be a deserted, ancient relic lost in the chaotic pace of modern time. However, I believe that chivalry is sti ll practiced by many people today, whether they realize it or not. Academic professors show honor and selfless service when they sacrifice all the laurels of their profession to dedicate their lives to teaching the next generation, soldiers show courage when they fight to protect others, and athletes are respectful and courteous. In the story Sir Gawain And The Green Knight, Sir Gawain is a knight of th...

Grant v Australian Knitting Mills Essay

The material facts of the case: The underwear, consisting of two pairs of underpants and two siglets was bought by appellant at the shop of the respondents. The retailer had purchased them with other stock from the manufacturer. The appellant put on one suit and by the evening he felt itching on the ankles. Next day a redness appeared on each ankle. The appellant treated himself with calomine lotion but the irritation was such that he scratched the places till be bled. He carried on with the underwear (washed). His skin was getting worse, so he consulted a dermatologist, Dr. Upton, who advised him to discard the underwear which he did. He was confined to bed for a long time. The rash became generalized and very acute. When he felt sufficiently recovered he resumed his medical practice, but soon had a relapse. His condition was so serious that he went into hospital. The illness was most severe, involving acute suffering, and at times Dr. Upton feared that his patient might die. The appellant bought action against th e respondents, claiming damages on the ground that he had contracted dermatitis by reason of the improper condition of underwear (presence of an irritating chemical – free sulphite, in the cuffs or ankle ends) purchased by him from the respondents, John Martin & Co., Ld., and manufactured by the respondents, the Australian Knitting Mills, Ld. Judgements/opinions in the case: 1) In their Lordships’ judgement the retailers are liable in contract of sale. The facts set out show negligence in manufacture. If excess sulphites  were left in garment, that could only be because someone was at fault and the appellant is not required to lay his finger on the exact person who was responsible, or to specify what he did wrong. 2) The decision treats negligence, where there is a duty to take care. In Donoghue’s case the duty was deduced simply from the facts relied upon: article issued to the world, used by the party in the state in which it was prepared and issued without it being changed in any way and without there being any warning of, or means of, detecting, the hidden danger. There was no personal intercourse between the maker and the user; but the duty is personal, because it is inter partes (between parties), it needs no interchange of words, spoken or written, or signs of offer or assent. The want of care and the injury are in essence directly and intimately connected. The word ‘control’ in D. case is used to emphasise the essential factor that the consumer must use the article exactly as it left the maker, and used it as it was intended to be used (control, of the maker, until it is used – artificial, because they parted with all the control when they sold the article). 3) In D. case can only be applied when the defect is hidden and unknown to the consumer. The presence of the deleterious chemicals in the pants, due to negligence in manufacture, was a hidden and latent defect, just as much as the remains of the snail in the opaque bottle: it could not be detected by any examination that could reasonably be made. Nothing happened between the making of the garments and their being worn to change their condition. The garments were made by the manufacturers for the purpose of being worn exactly as they were worn in fact by the appellant: it was not contemplated that they should be first washed. 4) D. was a case of food/drink to be consumed internally, but there is no distinction. The garments were made to be worn next to skin. Lord Atkin specifically puts as examples of what is covered by the principle he is enunciating things operating externally, such as ‘an ointment, a soap, a cleaning fluid or cleaning powder.’ 5) The decision in D. essentially depended on the point that the article should reach the consumer or user subject to the same defect as it had when it left the manufacturer, and this was true for garment.

Along with these promising sales growths and market share what makes the online business a viable method to penetrate the Indonesian luxury market thru e commerce is that retail space is expensive and this could be a restriction for niche brands with limited resources that want to penetrate this lucrative emerging country. Coupling the restriction of retail space is the social and political intervention and by law international distributors are obligated to form partnerships with local distributors. All these factors make internet retailing an alternative mode to sell odds in Indonesia. Solid growth in GAP in disposable income resulting in the consumer to increase their spending according to Ironmonger. The size of the middle class is on the rise making this an attractive market for luxury brands. According to Ironmonger the luxury markets was expected to be valued $742. 5 million a 10% increase from 2012. Like Malaysian, Indonesian also tend to travel in order to buy luxury to destinations such as Bangkok and Singapore. According to Ironmonger Indonesia is projected to outperform Singapore. With regard to luxury e commerce, Indonesia appears to be unkempt with Reborn being a key player in this category offering luxury brands at discounted prices. Given that majority of online shoppers in Indonesia are bargain shoppers perhaps there is room for more flash sales luxury commerce. However like Indonesia the luxury brands consumer is also suffering from brands fatigue and craves for new and niche brands. The brand selection for this market will mirror that of the Malaysian market but product mix will be driven by discounted items rather that full selling value items. Contemporary luxury niche brands will be embraced by this market as there is a customer who is seeking for unique and on trend luxury brands as illustrated by street style blobs such as the Skate Style Journal and The Actual Style dot com

A Guide to the Origins and Celebration of Kwanzaa

A Guide to the Origins and Celebration of Kwanzaa Unlike Christmas, Ramadan, or Hanukkah, Kwanzaa is unaffiliated with a major religion. One of the newer American holidays, Kwanzaa originated in the turbulent 1960s to instill racial pride and unity in the black community. Now, fully recognized in mainstream America, Kwanzaa is widely celebrated. The U.S. Postal Service debuted its first Kwanzaa stamp in 1997, releasing a second commemorative stamp in 2004. In addition, former U.S. presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush recognized the day while in office. But Kwanzaa has its share of critics, despite its mainstream status. Are you considering celebrating Kwanzaa this year? Discover the arguments for and against it, whether all blacks (and any non-blacks) celebrate it and the impact of Kwanzaa on American culture. What Is Kwanzaa? Established in 1966 by the African-American professor, activist and author Ron Karenga (or Maulana Karenga), Kwanzaa aims to reconnect black Americans to their African roots and recognize their struggles as a people by building community. It is observed every year between Dec. 26 and Jan. 1. Derived from the Swahili term, â€Å"matunda ya kwanza,† which means â€Å"first-fruits,† Kwanzaa is based on African harvest celebrations such as the seven-day Umkhost of Zululand. According to the official Kwanzaa website, â€Å"Kwanzaa was created out of the philosophy of Kawaida, which is a cultural nationalist philosophy that argues that the key challenge in black people’s [lives] is the challenge of culture, and that what Africans must do is to discover and bring forth the best of their culture, both ancient and current, and use it as a foundation to bring into being models of human excellence and possibilities to enrich and expand our lives.† Just as many African harvest celebrations run for seven days, Kwanzaa has seven principles known as the Nguzo Saba. They are: umoja (unity); kujichagulia (self-determination); ujima (collective work and responsibility); ujamaa (cooperative economics); nia (purpose); kuumba (creativity); and imani (faith). Celebrating Kwanzaa During Kwanzaa celebrations, a mkeka (straw mat) rests on a table covered by kente cloth, or another African fabric. On top of the mkeka sits a kinara (candleholder) in which the mishumaa saba (seven candles) go. The colors of Kwanzaa are black for the people, red for their struggle, and green for the future and hope that comes from their struggle, according to the official Kwanzaa website. Mazao (crops) and the kikombe cha umoja (the unity cup) also sit on the mkeka. The unity cup is used to pour tambiko (libation) in remembrance of ancestors. Lastly, African art objects and books about the life and culture of African people sit on the mat to symbolize commitment to heritage and learning. Do All Blacks Observe Kwanzaa? Although Kwanzaa celebrates African roots and culture, the National Retail Foundation found that just 13 percent of African Americans observe the holiday, or approximately 4.7 million. Some blacks have made a conscious decision to avoid the day because of religious beliefs, the origins of the day and the history of Kwanzaa’s founder (all of which will be covered later). If you’re curious about whether a black person in your life observes Kwanzaa because you want to get him or her a related card, gift, or another item, simply ask. Don’t make assumptions. Can Non-Blacks Celebrate Kwanzaa? While Kwanzaa focuses on the black community and African Diaspora, people from other racial groups may join in the celebration. Just as people from a range of backgrounds partake in cultural celebrations such as Cinco de Mayo, Chinese New Year or Native American powwows, those who aren’t of African descent may celebrate Kwanzaa. As the Kwanzaa Web site explains, â€Å"The principles of Kwanzaa and the message of Kwanzaa has a universal message for all people of good will. It is rooted in African culture, and we speak as Africans must speak, not just to ourselves, but to the world.† New York Times  reporter Sewell Chan grew up celebrating the day. â€Å"As a child growing up in Queens, I remember attending Kwanzaa celebrations at the American Museum of Natural History with relatives and friends who, like me, were Chinese-American,† he  said. â€Å"The holiday seemed fun and inclusive (and, I admit, a bit exotic), and I eagerly committed to memory the Nguzo Saba, or seven principles†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Check local newspaper listings, black churches, cultural centers or museums to find out where to celebrate Kwanzaa in your community. If an acquaintance of yours celebrates Kwanzaa, ask for permission to attend a celebration with her. However, it would be offensive to go as a voyeur who doesn’t care about the day itself but is curious to see what it’s about. Go because you agree with the principles of the day and are committed to implementing them in your own life and community. After all, Kwanzaa is a day of tremendous significance for millions of people. Objections to Kwanzaa Who opposes Kwanzaa? Certain Christian groups who regard the holiday as pagan, individuals who question its authenticity and those who object to founder Ron Karenga’s personal history. A group called the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny (BOND), for one, labeled the holiday as racist and anti-Christian. In an article in the self-avowed right-wing anti-muslim magazine FrontPage, BOND founder the Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson takes issue with the trend of preachers incorporating Kwanzaa into their messages, calling the move â€Å"a horrible mistake† which distances blacks from Christmas. â€Å"First of all, as we’ve seen, the whole holiday is made up,† Peterson argues. â€Å"Christians who celebrate or incorporate Kwanzaa are moving their attention away from Christmas, the birth of our Savior, and the simple message of salvation: love for God through his Son.† The Kwanzaa Web site explains that Kwanzaa isn’t religious or designed to replace religious holidays. â€Å"Africans of all faiths can and do celebrate Kwanzaa, i.e., Muslims, Christians, Jews, Buddhists†¦,† the site says. â€Å"For what Kwanzaa offers is not an alternative to their religion or faith but a common ground of African culture which they all share and cherish.† African Roots? and a Troubled Founder Even those who don’t oppose Kwanzaa on religious grounds may take issue with it because Kwanzaa is not an actual holiday in Africa and, furthermore, the customs founder Ron Karenga based the holiday on roots in Eastern Africa. During the  transatlantic slave trade, however, blacks were taken from Western Africa, meaning that Kwanzaa and its  Swahili  terminology aren’t part of most African Americans’ heritage. Another reason people choose not to observe Kwanzaa is the background of Ron Karenga. In the 1970s, Karenga was  convicted  of felony assault and false imprisonment. Two black women from the Organization Us, a black nationalist group with which he’s still affiliated, were reportedly victimized during the attack. Critics question how Karenga can be an advocate for unity within the black community when he himself was allegedly involved in an attack on black women. Wrapping Up While Kwanzaa and its founder are sometimes subject to criticism, journalists such as Afi-Odelia E. Scruggs celebrate the holiday because they believe in the principles it espouses. In particular, the values Kwanzaa gives to children and to the black community at large are why Scruggs observes the day. Initially, Scruggs thought Kwanzaa was contrived, but seeing its principles at work changed her mind. In a  Washington Post  column, she wrote, â€Å"I’ve seen Kwanzaa’s ethical principles work in many little ways. When I remind the fifth-graders I teach that they aren’t practicing ‘umoja’ when they disturb their friends, they quiet down. †¦When I see neighbors turning vacant lots into community gardens, I’m watching a practical application of both ‘nia’ and ‘kuumba.’† In short, while Kwanzaa has inconsistencies and its founder a troubled history, the holiday aims to unify and uplift those who observe it. Like other holidays, Kwanzaa can be used as a positive force in the community. Some believe this outweighs any concerns about authenticity.

Game theory Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Game theory - Essay Example Game theory is used to understand competitive situations. These are normally those scenarios in which the chances of a certain outcome largely depend on parties involved and also on a bit of chance. Consequently, the theory focuses on predicting what these respective players will do and hence the most appropriate alternative is chosen by the analyst. There is a particular mathematician who was responsible for this theory and was known as John Von Neumann. (Miller, 2003) Through his work in the mid twentieth century, the expert was able to spearhead several divisions in this interesting theory. Some of the divisions include In the 2-person versus n-person division, the 2-Person approach largely focuses on the choices available to two players and how to bring out optimum outcomes. On the other hand, in the n - person division, great attention is given to the occurrences and coalitions that are likely to come out of prevailing circumstances. Then again the cooperative division of the game theory largely dwells on choices that are available to parties who have been bound by certain agreements. In uncooperative game theory, parties may find themselves obliged to one another because of the negative outcomes that may emanate out of their choices. Lastly, in the Zero sum scenario, players are likely to loose everything when the other party gains something. On the other hand, in the non zero sum, a player can gain something and still room for his or her opponent to gain it too. Despite all these branches, there are certain common characteristics that make the game theory what it is today. These can be summarized under the following three criterions Extensive or game tree form Normal or strategic matrix Characteristic function All forms of the game theory usually indicate the sequences or patterns of choices available to players and their chances of occurrences. The latter part largely depends upon a device and is usually backed up by some pay offs that are likely to occur after the end of a pattern of choices. The second aspect that makes the game theory what it is the normal, strategic or pay-off matrix. In this kind of approach, one is supposed to look though a series of avenues available to other players in the competition or event. Intersections of these avenues reflect the payoffs granted to a particular player doing the analysis. Additionally, the characteristic function is that possible coalitions that a particular player can ensure for another player regardless of what others end up doing in the process. (Osborne, 2004) Criticisms of the game theory in understanding economic factors or strategic behaviour of firms The most important thing to note in the game theory is the fact that players involved within a certain scenario are rational. It is also assumed that these players have well defined gaols that have been ranked from most important to least important. Besides these, the game theory is founded upon the fact that all decisions that are being made by certain individuals can be attached to a particular value and that players always tend
